Room 7 Models - Ideas For A New Playground

Room 7 had a great time designing and then making 3 dimensional models of their ideas for a new playground in front of the existing Room 6, 7 and 8. There are some great ideas that meet the criteria of having a playground that is fun, safe, colourful and suitable for all ages groups and abilities.

Coastal Cross Country

Once again the Oakura Students demonstrated our school values while competing in the Coastal Cross Country event at Omata. Although the course was challenging, all students tried their very best and achieved their personal goals.
We were proud of each and every one of you.

Cycle Skills Training

All Year 5 & 6 students were lucky enough to take part in cycle skills training. Having a correctly fitted helmet is very important so that our brains are protected.

The 'slow race' proved a challenge with students having to ride as slow as they possibly could across the courts. The winner was the last person to get to the other side. Well done to Allie.

In room 7 we have been learning about the importance of including vegetables in our diet. We also discovered that you can grow a new onion plant just by planting the pieces that is cut off the bottom of the onion and often thrown away. We also discovered that mushrooms grow from spores.

People Savers Course

Room 7 students were lucky enough to have Nicki along from the Red Cross to guide them through the People Savers course. The DRS ABC was emphasised throughout the day and students learnt about the importance of tilting an unconscious person's head back to ensure their air way is unblocked.
At all times students need to consider their own safety.

Science in Room 7

Room 7 students soaked an egg in vinegar for 3 days. They discovered the acid in the vinegar reacted with the calcium in the egg shell. This reaction created carbon bubbles. After 3 days, the egg shell had almost completely dissolved. Now we have the 'shell-less' egg soaking in a sugar solution. What will happen we wonder?

The Year 5 & 6 team had a great afternoon yesterday playing their games that they had created. Some students made up indoor games while others created outdoor games. Govett Brewster Art Gallery

Room 7 students were fortunate enough to attend a session at the art gallery to learn about the history of film animation. Len Lye used pictures to make early movies. We had a look at old film strips and had a go at creating our own art to put inside a zoetrope. It was a great session which involved lots of hands on learning. A big thank you to our parent helpers and to Chris who ran the session.

Interschool Games Against Coastal Taranaki

Once again our students represented their school very well with everybody playing well as a team. We came away with some great results. Well done to our supporters and our wonderful coaches. You help make interschool games a very rewarding experience for everyone involved.

Puanga Activities

Room 7 and Room 5 students worked together to create a piece of art that reflected some information they found out about Puanga. The students had fun creating different art designs for kites as during the Maori New Year, kites are often flown. This is because the kite represents a connection between the Earth and heaven.

QR Code Scavenger Hunt

Our Year 5 & 6 students really enjoyed using ipads to find QR codes located in secret locations around the school environment. Working in teams, once they found the codes, the students had to scan them with their ipads to reveal a question related to fractions and ratios. Well done to the winning team - a novel way to practise our maths skills.

Ratios

This week your homework focuses on ratios. If you are unsure about how to solve problems that involve ratios, copy and paste the link below and view the Maths Antics clip to help with your understanding.
